8. Point Grey Secondary - Japan Exchange
-The Japan Exchange Program has been an important part of the school for a number of years. Since 1995 we have sent four PG delegations to Japan and Tahara has now sent five delegations to PG. The Program provides a great opportunity for our students to directly interact with native speakers and expand their personal knowledge of the life of Japanese students in a way not possible in the classroom. The Program also gives the chance for Japanese students to come to Vancouver and interact with the Point Grey Community and provides a double opportunity for the participating Point Grey students to interact with the Japanese students - both in Japan and in Vancouver.
-We have found that this reciprocal program supports in a significant way the learning of those who study Japanese. There is no question that even the short two-week period our students' visit Japan enriches their learning experience and enables those participants to better grasp the background to the language. Many of the PG students who have participated in our Japan Exchange Program still keep in touch with their host families in Japan. Also, many PG students from the Exchange go back to Japan again when they are at university. Since the Program started some of PG students have subsequently studied at prestigious universities in Japan -- Waseda University, Ritsumeikan University, Seishin Women's University. One PG student, who majored in Engineering at UBC, completed her co-op experience in Japan at Nippon Steel, the largest steel company in the world. It is clear that both the Japanese and PG students benefit enormously from exchange programs such as this.
